Privacy policy

Last updated: 23 September 2026

1. Who we are

Smoogies is operated by Moi! ("Smoogies", "we", "us", "our"). Moi! is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.

  • Legal entity: Moi!
  • Registered address: Stoklegging 7, 9451 KV Rolde, The Netherlands
  • Contact email: support@smoogies.com
  • Contact phone: +31 592 479 386
  • Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number: 69401349

2. What this policy covers

This Privacy Policy applies to:

  • the Smoogies website at www.smoogies.com, including the forum and the encyclopedia
  • the Smoogies game, whether you play it in a browser at app.smoogies.com or through the Smoogies app
  • the Smoogies backend services, our support channels, and account administration

Smoogies is a cosy online pet game for teenagers and adults. Our intended audience is 13 and over.

Our Terms and Conditions govern your use of the service. This policy explains what we do with your personal data while you use it.

3. What personal data we process

Account and identity data

  • Player ID and player code
  • Guest or registered-account status
  • Player-chosen first name or display name
  • Player name or username
  • Email address
  • Language preference

Login and security data

  • Password, when you create or upgrade to a registered account
  • Authentication token used to keep you signed in
  • Server-side hashed password and hashed authentication token

Your account is held in a shared account system used across the Smoogies website and game, so one account signs you in to both.

Gameplay and profile data

  • Pets and pet names
  • Pet species, quality, traits, levels, timestamps, and progression data
  • Inventory items and home layout data
  • In-game balances such as SmoogieDollars
  • Onboarding and tutorial progress
  • Adventure session progress and related sync data

Activity, support, and audit data

  • Shop purchases and transaction history
  • Reward and interaction event history
  • Pet action history
  • Admin and support actions taken on an account
  • Feedback and support form text, reply preference, player code, support code, and any screenshot or image you choose to attach
  • Basic device and app context used for support and fraud review, such as app version, language, device class, operating system, browser or runtime label, screen size, viewport size, screen pixel ratio, reported device model, reported device memory and processor core count, touch-point count, whether your device supports 3D graphics, timezone, your device's offset from UTC, how far your device clock differs from our server clock, and user agent string
  • The IP address your device connects from, and a per-install identifier generated by the app so we can tell one browser or app installation from another
  • An approximate location derived from that IP address (country, region, city, plus approximate coordinates for that city and its timezone) together with the network or hosting provider it belongs to and whether that network looks like a proxy, a hosting provider or a mobile carrier, used for support and integrity review

Error and diagnostic reports

When the game hits an error, it sends us an automatic report so we can fix it. We do not use a third-party crash-reporting service; the reports come straight to our own server.

  • The error message, where in the code it happened, and the technical stack trace
  • The screen you were on and a short trail of the actions that led up to it
  • Any warnings or errors the game logged just before, which are technical messages written by the game itself rather than anything you typed
  • The device and app details listed above, and the per-install identifier, so we can tell whether an error affects one device or many

A report is sent once per distinct error per app version, not every time it happens.

The website and the forum

If you post in the Smoogies forum, we process the content you post, the name it is posted under, and the time you posted it. Anything you post in the forum is public. It can be read by anyone who visits the site, including people without an account, and it may be indexed by search engines. Please do not put personal details you would not want made public into a forum post.

Our web server keeps ordinary request logs for security and troubleshooting, containing the IP address, the page requested, the time, and the user agent string. These are covered by the same 90-day limit set out under Retention.

In-app purchases

In-app purchases are not available yet. When they are, you will buy SmoogieDollars through Google Play or the Apple App Store, and the payment happens entirely inside that store. We never see or receive your card number, bank details or billing address. What reaches us is a purchase record: which pack was bought, when, the store's transaction identifier, and the amount, which we need in order to credit your account, to handle support and refund queries, and to keep the tax records the law requires of us.

Data from the previous Smoogies website

Smoogies ran as a browser game at smoogies.com before this app. To let returning players reclaim the pets they raised there, we imported the old site's player records: username, email address where one was held, the stored password hash from that old system, and the pets and last-login date on the account.

If you had an account on the old site, we hold this whether or not you have ever opened the new game. Our basis for it is the terms and privacy statement you agreed to on that site, and we use it for one thing only: letting you claim a pet back.

Two limits on that, which we hold ourselves to:

  • One invitation, ever. We send a single unsolicited message offering you your old pets. There are no reminders, no follow-ups and no other campaign mail of any kind. If, after choosing a pet through that link, you actively ask us to email its claim code, we send that one transactional copy only. It is never preselected, never used for another message, and does not make the address a mailing-list address. The invitation carries an unsubscribe link, and we do not use these addresses for anything else.
  • Twelve months, then it is destroyed. Reclaiming a pet is a service with an end date. Twelve months after we imported a record, it is deleted automatically: the username, the email address, the old password hash and the old pets. This happens whether or not you claimed anything, and whether or not we ever managed to reach you.

You can also ask us to delete your legacy record straight away, at any point before then, using the contact details below.

Local device data

To support offline play and recovery after connection loss, Smoogies stores local app data on your device, including account and session state, player profile state, pet data, inventory data, onboarding progress, queued offline actions, cached maps and config, and local adventure resume data.

4. Data we do not collect

Smoogies does not collect your precise or device-based location (such as GPS), your contacts, microphone or camera data, advertising identifiers, third-party analytics profiles, or device push tokens.

The approximate location described above is looked up from your IP address only. It is a coarse estimate, it is often wrong at city level, and it is not read from your device's location services. Where it includes coordinates, those are the centre of the city or region the address is believed to be in, not a position measured from your device.

Smoogies does not automatically access your photo library or media gallery. If you choose to attach a screenshot or image to a feedback form, we will process that uploaded file to review your report.

We do not show adverts, and we do not profile you for advertising.

5. Cookies and similar storage

We use cookies and similar device storage only where they are needed to make the service work:

  • a session cookie on the website, so that you stay signed in while you browse and post
  • local storage inside the game, which holds your progress, your queued offline actions and your cached game data, as described under Local device data above

We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies. Because the storage we use is strictly necessary to deliver a service you asked for, we do not ask for consent to it, and there is nothing to opt out of other than signing out or clearing your browser or app data.

6. How we collect your data

  • Directly from you, for example when you enter a display name, email address, player name, or password
  • Directly from you when you post in the forum or submit a feedback or support form, including any screenshot or image you choose to attach
  • Automatically when you play the game and progress through gameplay systems
  • Automatically from app and request context so we can understand the recent environment used on an account and troubleshoot reports
  • Automatically from your network connection, which is how your IP address reaches our server
  • From Google Play or the Apple App Store, in the form of a purchase record, if and when you buy SmoogieDollars
  • From the player database of the previous Smoogies website, on the basis of the terms you agreed to there, for legacy pet claims only
  • From your device storage when restoring local progress, offline actions, or cached content
  • Automatically when the game encounters an error, in the form of the diagnostic report described above
  • From support and admin workflows when support actions are taken on an account

7. Why we use your data

  • To create and maintain your account
  • To authenticate you and protect account security
  • To deliver core gameplay features and sync progress
  • To support offline-first play and later synchronisation
  • To operate the in-game economy and inventory systems
  • To run the forum and the rest of the website
  • To deliver and support purchases, and to keep the accounting records the law requires
  • To provide support and troubleshoot player issues
  • To find and fix crashes and errors in the game
  • To let returning players claim pets from the previous Smoogies website
  • To investigate abuse, duplication, fraud, and other integrity issues
  • To maintain service reliability, logs, and operational security
  • To comply with legal obligations

8. Legal bases under the GDPR

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on:

  • Performance of a contract, for your account, your saved game, the forum, support, and delivering anything you buy
  • Legitimate interests, for service security, fraud and abuse investigation, error diagnostics, and keeping the game working across devices. Our interest is in running a service that is not broken and not being cheated, and we weigh it against your interests each time we decide to keep something
  • Legal obligation, for tax and accounting records relating to purchases, and for responding to lawful requests
  • Consent, where we ever ask for it. Today the only thing resting on consent is your choice to attach a screenshot to a support message, which you can simply not do

Records imported from the previous Smoogies website rest on the terms and privacy statement agreed on that site, for the single purpose described above.

9. Sharing of personal data

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data for third-party advertising, or for third-party cross-site or cross-app tracking.

We share personal data with:

  • hosting, infrastructure, database and technical service providers acting on our behalf
  • Google and Apple, where you install the app from their store or buy SmoogieDollars through it. They act as the seller for that transaction and process the payment under their own privacy policies
  • our IP geolocation provider, currently ipwho.is, with whom we have a data processing agreement. Only the IP address is sent. No account, player name, email address or gameplay data is included, and the result is cached on our own server so the same address is not looked up repeatedly. Nothing else about you leaves our own infrastructure this way
  • support or administrative personnel who need access to assist users or maintain the service
  • professional advisors or authorities, where required by law

Our current hosting and infrastructure provider is TransIP. Moi! operates its own Smoogies server on that hosted infrastructure.

10. International transfers

Our own servers are in the Netherlands, and your account and saved game stay there.

Where a provider we use is based outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is covered either by an adequacy decision of the European Commission or by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. This applies in particular to Google and Apple, who handle app distribution and, when purchases go live, payment.

11. Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described above, unless a longer retention period is required by law. Data stored locally on your device remains there until it is overwritten, the app data is cleared, or the app or browser storage is removed.

  • IP addresses are removed automatically 90 days after they were last seen. This covers every place we hold one, including web server logs and the cache of previously looked-up addresses, so the approximate location derived from an address goes with it.
  • Records imported from the previous Smoogies website are destroyed automatically 12 months after we imported them, as described above.
  • Feedback and support messages from people who have deleted their account lose their contact details 30 days after the message was sent, as described below.
  • Purchase and accounting records are kept for 7 years, which is the retention period Dutch tax law requires of us. This is a record of a transaction, not of your gameplay.
  • Forum posts stay up until you or we remove them. Deleting your account does not automatically delete your posts, because a conversation other people took part in stops making sense with half of it missing. Ask us if you want your posts removed as well.
  • Your account: when you delete it, everything that identifies you is removed at once. The saved game itself is kept for 12 months, detached from you, so a deletion you did not intend can still be undone; after that it is erased automatically. See Account deletion below.

12. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. These include hashed passwords on the server, hashed authentication tokens on the server, encrypted connections, authenticated API access for protected endpoints, and logging and audit trails for certain actions.

No service can promise perfect security. If a breach happens that is likely to put your rights at risk, we will tell you and the supervisory authority, as the GDPR requires.

13. Your rights

If the GDPR applies to you, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or request portability of your personal data, and to withdraw consent where consent is the legal basis.

To exercise these rights, contact support@smoogies.com. We answer within one month. There is no charge, and we will not close your account or degrade your game because you asked.

You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. Ours is the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl). You may also complain to the authority in the EU country where you live.

14. Account deletion

You can delete your Smoogies account from inside the game. Open the player panel from the player icon in the top bar, then Account > Delete account.

What is deleted straight away

Everything that identifies you is removed at once, permanently, and cannot be restored:

  • your email address and your password, and the login itself in our central account system
  • every signed-in session on every device
  • the IP addresses we had stored, and the approximate locations derived from them
  • your device records: the per-install identifier, the device and browser details, and the history of when each install was last seen
  • any error and diagnostic reports from your account

Feedback you sent us is handled separately

If you sent us feedback or a complaint, we do not delete it when you delete your account. Deleting your account is not the same as withdrawing a complaint, and you may well have deleted because of the thing you complained about.

Instead, your message and the details needed to answer it are kept for 30 days from the day you sent it. That is our window to reply. Deleting your account does not extend it. After that window we remove your email address, your name, your player and support codes, the device details and any screenshot you attached, and we keep only what you wrote and what we did about it.

What is kept for a year, and why

Your saved game is not destroyed immediately. Your pets and their names, your items, your home and garden, your progress, your player name and your player code are kept for 12 months, detached from everything above.

This is deliberate. Deleting an account takes one tap on an unlocked phone, and it is not always the account holder doing it. Destroying years of a saved game the instant somebody presses a button would make an ordinary mistake, or somebody else's bad joke, permanent and unfixable.

During those 12 months the save is not linked to you: there is no email address, no login, no device and no address attached to it. The only thing that still points at it is your player code, which the game shows you before you confirm the deletion. If you want your game back, contact us and quote that code, and we can attach it to a new login for you. We cannot look the code up for you, so write it down if you think you may want it.

After 12 months the save is erased for good, automatically, and nothing of the account remains.

Deleting some of your data without closing your account

You do not have to delete your account to have something removed. Email support@smoogies.com with your player code and what you want deleted, and we will remove it and confirm when it is done. That covers feedback and support messages you sent us, forum posts you have made, the IP addresses and device records held for your account, error reports from your account, and your record from the previous Smoogies website. Your account and your progress are untouched. The steps are set out on the account deletion page.

If you want everything gone now

If you would rather not wait out the 12 months, email support@smoogies.com and ask us to erase the account completely. We will remove the save as well.

Other options in the game

If you want to sign out on this device without deleting anything, use Log out in the same account section. That ends the session on this device only and leaves everything on our servers as it is.

There is also a Remove login details option on the log out panel. Be careful with that one: it keeps the game on this device but destroys the account behind it, so your email and password stop working for good and the progress on that device can never be recovered anywhere else. It is not a log out.

If you cannot reach the game and still need help with deletion, contact support@smoogies.com or see the account deletion page. This is also the way to ask us to delete a legacy record from the old Smoogies website if you never made an account in the new game.

15. Children

Smoogies is intended for players aged 13 and over, and is not directed at younger children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children below that age. If you believe a child has provided personal data in a way that should not have happened, contact us at support@smoogies.com and we will delete it.

In the Netherlands and much of the EU, a person under 16 needs a parent or guardian to agree on their behalf where consent is the legal basis. Parents can contact us at the same address about any data held on their child.

16. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will publish the updated version and change the "Last updated" date above. If changes are material, we will also give notice in the game or by another appropriate means.
